The phrase rib “cage” has always disturbed me. It’s counter to the way we want to the ribs to feel or function in our body. The ribs are not meant to be stiff and rigid like a cage. Instead they expand and broaden with each in breath and contract and narrow with each out breath. This keeps the articulations of the ribs at the spine rotating like bucket handles with each breath which opens the joints in the mid spine. Stiffness in the rib “cage” contributes to postural collapse, neck and shoulder dysfunction as well as sacral & low back problems due to the increased load on the back. This week’s class will explore how “Unlocking the Rib Cage”not only improves posture but increases vitality through expanded breathing.
